One day, Maharishi Narad came with Lord Vishnu’s proposal to marry Parvati but when Mata Parvati came to know about this, she started mourning.
On the question of her friend, she said that she is doing harsh austerity to get Lord Shiva in the form of a husband. After this, Mother Parvati went to the forest on the advice of her friend and got absorbed in Lord Shiva’s worship. During this period, on the third day of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapad, Mata Parvati constructed the Shivling from the sand and awakened the whole night in the worship of Lord Shiva.
