Pune: After the announcement of Maratha reservation and the demand for Dhangar reservation, Brahmins too have demanded that their social and economic backwardness should be studied. They have said that the Backward Class Commission should conduct a survey of their condition and prepare a report to find out their true condition. Interestingly, while they have demanded the survey, they haven’t demanded reservation.

It was just last month that All India Brahman Mahasangh passed a resolution during its national conference in which they had stated that there is no need for reservation for the community.

Govind Kulkarni, National President, Brahman Mahasangh had said, “We don’t need a reservation but we need protection as we are being targeted in many ways. We are submitting this resolution to the government and are hoping that they take cognizance and act."

Now, barely a month later, as the reservation protests took off for Marathas, the Brahmins have demanded that a survey should be conducted. Anand Dave, City President of Brahman Mahasangh, said, “It is a fact that not all Brahmins are in good condition. The ones who conduct puja get work for only 120 days in a month. Jobs aren’t available. In this condition, our Gujarat unit chief too has demanded that a survey should be done. We too are going to meet the backward class commission soon and are going to ask them to study the conditions of the Brahman community to find out the true status." __PuneM
