Pampa River is a combination of a number of rivers originating from the lands of Peermade. It is the third largest river in Kerala. It is considered as a 'Saint River'. It originates about 1650 m above the sea level. It has a length of 177 km. The river splits into several tributaries and falls into the Vembanad Lake. It runs through Ranni, Thiruvalla, Changanacherry and Ambalapuzha. Kakkiyar, Azhuthayar, Kakkatar and Kallar are the main tributaries. The main dams of this river are Pampayar and Kakiyar. Maniyar Irrigation Project and Sabarigiri Hydro Electro Project are situated there.
The renowned rice producing region, Kuttanad, gets water supply from Pampa River. The holy lace Pampa, near to Sabarimala, is situated on the banks of the Pampa River. The Perunthnaruvi waterfalls on the banks of the Pampa River is a favourite picnic spot for both domestic and foreign tourists. The Aranmula Boat Race and Maraman Convention, at Maraman near Kozhenchery, are also held in this river
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation has started operating buses to Palani and Thenkashi from Pampa for the convenience of the Sabarimala pilgrims. Besides, the Govt. of Tamilnadu has been given the permission to operate 20 buses from different parts of Tamil Nadu to Pampa. A chain service exists between Pampa and Nilackal base camp.

Bus services from Chengannoor, Kottayam and Ernakulam railway stations have started to help pilgrimage to pamba.Advance seat reservation facility is also available including group reservation prior to 10 days. The KSRTC will provide bus to Pampa from any place within 10 kms from special service centre for a group of 40 pilgrims.
The timing of bus from KSRTC is not specifically scheduled since bus will always available as and when required. That is, one bus will always be there at the bus station and will starts the trip just after filling the seating capacity.
