Lord Shiva is known as the destroyer God and Goddess Parvati is the divine consort who is always by his side. In fact she is the second consort of Lord Shiva after the death of his first wife Sati. She is not just a loving wife but also a devoted mother to Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha,
The association of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is often seen as a representation of the aesthetic with the family. Durga, Gauri, Uma, Kali, Lalitha, Ambika, Haimavati and Amba are the various names of Goddess Parvati. There are a total of 108 names by which she is known as and each of them has a special significance.
Lord Shiva did not accept Goddess Parvati immediately as his consort and she had to do a lot of penance to win his love and affection. According to legend Lord Shiva was greatly depressed after the death of his first wife, Sati and had retreated into a cave for meditation.
It was during these troubled times that the asuras decided to attack the Gods living in Heaven. Lord Indra along with the other Gods was driven out of Heaven and they went to seek the help of Lord Shiva to defeat the demons. However they were disappointed when they could not find him in Mount Kailash.
In desperation they sought the help of Goddess Sakhti who told them that the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati would help them defeat the demons. She also told them that Goddess Parvati will be a reincarnation of Sati and that she would be able to persuade Lord Shiva to come out of the cave.
Parvati was born to the King of the Mountains and from an young age she wanted to win the love and affection of Lord Shiva. With this intention in her heart she visited the cave where he was sitting in meditation.
She started cleaning and decorating the cave with fresh and beautiful flowers. She also got him food in the form of fruits that were found near the cave. However all this devotion and care did not soften the heart of Lord Shiva who continued with his meditation. There are many stories that indicate that Lord Shiva was not interested in her due to her dark complexion and this hurt her a lot.
She was disappointed with this but did not give up trying to win the love of Lord Shiva. She was determined to become the consort of Lord Shiva and decided to do tough penance for this purpose. She went into the forest and started doing the penance under very tough conditions,
During her penance she gave up food and did not have any clothes to shelter her tender body. She continued with the penance during the day and night. Irrespective of whether there was hot sun or pouring rain she did not give up. This tough penance finally made Lord Brahma appear before her to grant her the wish she wanted.
She wanted him to fulfill her wish of becoming beautiful and win the love of Lord Shiva. After been blessed by Lord Brahma she appeared before Lord Shiva who was mesmerized by her radiant beauty. He immediately fell in love with her and decided to marry her.
They were married in a ritualistic manner and thus Goddess Parvati became the consort of Lord Shiva. She is always depicted by his side and is considered the symbol of love and affection. Her calm and patient demeanor is the perfect combination for the angry personality of Lord Shiva.
